William Easterly, a critic of foreign aid programs, contends that such assistance has often failed to promote growth and reduce poverty, instead enabling authoritarian regimes. He cites examples like Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi, arguing that historical aid practices have fostered dictatorships. With the recent dismantling of USAID by figures like Donald Trump and Elon Musk, Easterly emphasizes that such actions are not only misguided but undemocratic, stressing the need for reform in how aid is delivered rather than its outright elimination.
It's illegal and it's undemocratic. Even if I like the idea of moving away from aid, I cannot condone this horrific way to go about it.
What used to be the divine right of kings has in our time become the development right of dictators.
