The disease of electoral denialism has become a global phenomenon, with unfounded accusations of fraud leading to widespread challenges to electoral legitimacy and public confidence.
Between May 2020 and April 2024, one in five elections was challenged. This included boycotts, refusals to accept results, legal challenges, and escalating violence.
Over the past 15 years, the global rate of electoral participation has declined by ten percentage points. In 1975, protests followed 3.8% of elections; today it is 27.6%.
To keep democracy alive in this era of radical uncertainty, it is necessary to preserve public confidence in the electoral process and its legitimacy.
