Opening statements started at 9:30 a.m. today at the criminal trial of former President Donald Trump, who faces 34 counts of falsifying business records in connection with a payment of $130,000 in hush money to an adult film actress ahead of his 2016 presidential campaign.
The trial marks the first time a former U.S. president has been charged in a criminal case. Trump pleaded not guilty to all counts and the trial is expected to last six to eight weeks.
Judge Juan Merchan, with a background as a felony case judge and experience in the Manhattan district attorney's office, presides over the trial. The trial will take place at the New York County Supreme Court.
