Voters Don't Want 19th-Century Abortion Laws
Briefly

Tuesday's Arizona Supreme Court ruling reinstated an 1864 territorial-era law banning virtually all abortions, putting the state at the forefront of anti-abortion legislation nationwide.
The law imposes criminal sanctions, including incarceration for providers assisting abortions, even in cases of rape and incest, potentially making Arizona one of the most restrictive states for abortion access.
Serra Sippel of the Brigid Alliance highlighted the regressive nature of the decision, stating it takes the country back 160 years to a dark time, generating fear for pregnant individuals.
Following the 15-week limit in March 2022 and the Dobbs decision overturning Roe v. Wade, the Brigid Alliance facilitated travel for around 195 Arizonans in 2023 to states allowing abortion, with thousands more abortions still conducted within Arizona.
