"According to the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse from Syracuse University, which has tracked data on immigration court judges from 2019 to 2024, Levine granted asylum in 97.9 percent of the cases she received. This acceptance rate is similar to that of Dillon, along with most of the judges the Department of Justice has terminated in San Francisco, who granted asylum in the vast majority of cases that reached their courtroom."
"San Francisco immigration court judges have a higher acceptance rate of asylum cases than the national average - which is less than half of cases at just 42.3 percent. This could be due to a number of factors, including where asylum seekers are from and the fact that many asylum seekers in San Francisco are represented by a lawyer. Only 4.2 percent of the asylum seekers whose cases Levine presided over did not have legal representation."
San Francisco immigration court judge Shira M. Levine was fired by the Department of Justice, the sixth San Francisco immigration judge terminated under the Trump administration. Judge Chloe S. Dillon was terminated less than two weeks earlier. Fourteen immigration court judges now remain in San Francisco. Levine, hired in 2021, had surpassed the two-year probationary period. Data from the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse show Levine granted asylum in 97.9% of her cases. San Francisco judges have a higher asylum acceptance rate than the national average of 42.3%. Only 4.2% of Levine’s asylum seekers lacked legal representation; 77% without counsel are denied. The Justice Department did not respond to requests for comment.
