Pat Salmon, aged 89 and from Rookfield, Knock, Co Mayo, faced final sentencing at the Central Criminal Court for the horrific sexual abuse of a five-year-old. Moments before sentencing by Ms Justice Caroline Biggs, Salmon told his counsel that he had to sleep on the floor of an overcrowded cell the night before. Salmon had been remanded in custody the previous Thursday pending finalisation of his sentence. The complaint about detention conditions occurred immediately prior to the court finalising the sentencing decision. He had been described as a 'self-proclaimed pillar of society.'
