More than 500 in-house attorneys identified which law firms their organizations engage and rated the highest level of legal work on a four-point scale: cost-efficient bulk tasks; routine matters; high-value, complex matters; and "bet-the-company" matters. Firm ratings were averaged and the highest-scoring firms were named to the Top Outside Counsel list. Industry-specific rankings were also produced. Organization rankings segmented respondents by eight organization types ranging from Fortune 250 companies to nonprofit institutions. Sidley Austin appears on six organization lists; Kirkland & Ellis and Latham & Watkins appear on four lists each; Cooley, DLA Piper and Morgan Lewis appear on three lists.
