Swedish Migration Agency struggles to clear backlog as waiting time passes 1,000 days
""We have been able to conclude quite a few of the really old cases, but we haven't concluded all of them," Holmes told The Local, putting the slower-than-expected progress down to the additional security checks which the government asked the agency to carry out from April 2025."
""The oldest case will probably be from 2023 in a couple of months or so, so we're working quite well towards that target," Holmes said."
""There's a lot of work to be done, and we are committed to ensuring that all cases are handled fairly and efficiently, despite the challenges we face with the backlog and additional checks.""
The Swedish Migration Agency is struggling to clear a backlog of four-year-old citizenship cases, with thousands still awaiting case officers. Asa Holmes noted that while some old cases have been resolved, the average processing time has increased to 1,021 days. The agency aims to conclude 5,900 cases older than March 2022 before summer, processing 1,000 to 1,500 decisions weekly. Some cases date back to 2016, and the agency is tracking these long-delayed applications to ensure progress towards their targets.
