"Sometimes, the biggest levers we have for action come out of the courtroom. As we work to tackle the issues our residents' care about the most, we need a champion willing to think outside of the box on homelessness, public safety and housing. After getting to know her, I believe Susana is that champion for change."
"San Jose is a big city with big challenges - challenges that I am looking forward to tackling. It's a city that has always been on the forefront of innovation both inside and outside of city government and I'm excited to continue that legacy from the City Attorney's office."
San Jose selected Sacramento City Attorney Susana Alcala Wood to succeed Nora Frimann, who is retiring after five years. The City Council made the pick during a closed session, with Mayor Matt Mahan leading closed-door vetting of candidates. The appointment positions Wood to advise and defend new city laws and to confront major local issues including homelessness, public safety, and housing. Wood has served in multiple California city attorney offices, leads the League of California Cities' city attorney department, holds a leadership role in the International Municipal Lawyers Association, and serves on the Attorney General's Statewide Reproductive Rights Task Force.
