Plea lets ex-Torrance cop avoid jail for on-duty shooting of Black man
"Yes, ma'am."
"I think the dismissal is a justified decision by the D.A.'s office,"
"He's not returning to law enforcement,"
David Chandler, a 37-year-old former Torrance police officer charged with assault by a public officer for a 2021 on-duty shooting, accepted a plea deal that avoids jail. The agreement requires 100 hours of community service, one year of good behavior and relinquishment of his Peace Officer certification; compliance will lead to case dismissal in November 2026. Chandler was fired in 2023 for excessive force and was linked to a text thread where officers used racial slurs, joked about killing Black suspects, boasted about excessive force and made homophobic and antisemitic remarks. Chandler declined to speak in court and asserted his Fifth Amendment rights.
