One of Meta's big legal reckonings just ended in a settlement
Meta settled a lawsuit brought by Kentucky’s Breathitt County School District over alleged social media-related harms to teens’ mental health. YouTube, Snap, and TikTok also settled similar claims brought by the same school district seeking payment to cover costs of addressing those harms. The next trial was scheduled to begin in June as the first bellwether trial in federal multidistrict litigation involving claims from school districts, state attorneys general, and individuals against social media platforms. Similar bellwether cases are proceeding in California state court, with an initial case recently held. Bellwether trials are intended to provide jury-informed guidance for settlement negotiations across remaining cases. Settlement terms were not disclosed.
