New Study Finds AI Content Has No Statistically Significant Impact on Law Firm Google Rankings
"For the past two years, the loudest conversation in legal marketing has been whether AI content helps or hurts your Google rankings. We went out and measured it across more than 2,400 ranking appearances. The answer turned out to be neither. You are not going to leapfrog your competitors by publishing AI content, and you are not going to get slapped for it either. The algorithm just does not care."
Custom Legal Marketing conducted a comprehensive study analyzing AI-generated content in Google's top organic results for law firms. The research examined 2,435 law firm ranking appearances across 1,618 unique URLs and 1,021 unique domains, covering 28 legal keywords in 24 major U.S. cities. Using the CLM Sequoia platform and Winston AI analysis, researchers measured AI content percentages alongside word count and readability scores. The study found no statistically significant relationship between AI content percentage and ranking position, with a Spearman correlation of r = 0.065 and p-value of 0.138. This indicates that publishing AI-generated content neither provides competitive ranking advantages nor results in algorithmic penalties for law firms.
