"“a pure assassin.”"
"“He shot someone in the back as clear as you're looking at me,”"
"“He shot him right in the middle of the back, instantly dead.”"
"“Future violations may result in sanctions, which could include personal financial penalties, contempt of court findings, or relief specific to the prosecution of this matter,”"
Judge Margaret M. Garnett found that at least two senior Justice Department officials likely violated a local rule limiting prosecutors' public statements about a defendant's guilt by reposting President Donald Trump's comments about Luigi Mangione. Trump called Mangione "a pure assassin" and said he "shot someone in the back...instantly dead." A White House video clip was posted on X and reposted by Justice Department spokesperson Chad Gilmartin, who added "@POTUS is absolutely right," and was later reposted by Brian Nieves. The judge ordered the department to explain how the violations occurred and warned that future violations could lead to sanctions, including fines, contempt, or relief affecting the prosecution. Defense lawyers had earlier sought dismissal and removal of the death-penalty option; Mangione has pleaded not guilty to state and federal charges.
