Judge Orders Education Department Employees Reinstated
Briefly

A federal judge issued an injunction against the Trump administration's mass layoffs at the Department of Education, which affected half of its workforce. Judge Myong Joun criticized the administration's claims of 'reorganization' as a façade for dismantling the department unlawfully. He emphasized the necessity to reinstate over 2,000 employees to maintain the agency's operational capacity and fulfill its mandated responsibilities, especially in light of the systemic issues faced post-layoffs, such as backlog in civil rights complaints and student loan applications. The administration plans to contest the ruling.
Judge Myong Joun rejected the administration's argument that the layoffs, which affected half of the department's workforce, were part of a 'reorganization' aimed at improving efficiency.
Plaintiffs have demonstrated that the Department will not be able to carry out its statutory functions—and in some cases, is already unable to do so.
The injunction means the administration must reinstate more than 2,000 Education Department employees and reopen regional offices that were shuttered during the reduction in force.
Joun's order prevents the department from implementing President Donald Trump's March directive to dismantle the agency.
