HHS Launches Civil Rights Investigation Into Vanderbilt's Sharing of Transgender Patient Data
Briefly

Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) is under federal investigation for releasing transgender patients' medical records to Tennessee's attorney general. This investigation was launched after two VUMC patients filed a class-action lawsuit against the hospital for the breach.
VUMC has confirmed that it is cooperating with the investigation conducted by the Office of Civil Rights under HHS. The hospital has chosen not to provide further comments due to the ongoing nature of the investigation.
VUMC's issues with transgender care date back to September of the previous year, when concerns were raised by 60 Republican members of the Tennessee House of Representatives. This scrutiny led VUMC to pause gender-affirming surgeries for patients under the age of 18 while they conducted an internal review. Additionally, the attorney general's office launched a separate investigation into potential manipulation of medical billing codes related to gender-related treatment.
