United States District Judge James Boasberg ruled that the Trump administration likely showed contempt of court by ignoring his orders regarding the deportation of Venezuelan immigrants. Earlier, Boasberg had ordered a halt to these deportations and mandated that flights en route must return. The administration provided conflicting justifications for its inaction, claiming a misunderstanding of the order and asserting they could disregard it due to the flights being over international waters. Boasberg emphasized the need for government adherence to judicial rulings to uphold constitutional rights.
The Constitution does not tolerate willful disobedience of judicial orders - especially by officials of a coordinate branch who have sworn an oath to uphold it.
Boasberg noted that there was probable cause to suggest that the 'willful disobedience' of his previous rulings amounted to contempt by members of the Trump White House.
