"I am not going to rule on this because it would be inappropriate for me to do that at this point. The Supreme Court has to tell us its decision."
"It's going to be a lot of work. I'm not just go"
Two Torrance police officers, Matthew Concannon and Anthony Chavez, were indicted in 2023 for the 2018 shooting death of 23-year-old Christopher Deandre Mitchell, who was alleged to be a car theft suspect in possession of an air rifle. Special prosecutor Michael Gennaco filed a motion to dismiss the manslaughter charges, concluding prosecutors could not prove voluntary manslaughter at trial. The officers’ attorneys filed a joint motion agreeing with dismissal. Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Sam Ohta declined to rule because the case is currently before the California Supreme Court and said he needs time to review filings after any withdrawal.
