Couple launch judicial review over 'unfair' takeover of Hampstead Heath cafes
""It is horrible it has had to come to this, Ms Fernandez told the BBC. "I've had the worst anxiety because we have two little children and this is our livelihood. I've been terrified of not having a roof over my head." A petition set up by the Kentish Town couple to stop the handover has had more than 23,000 signatures, while a crowdfunder to raise money for legal representation raised more than 9,000.""
""Ms Fernandez said she had been overwhelmed by community support, with local swimmers helping connect the couple to barristers working pro bono, and residents raising nearly 10,000 towards legal costs, highlighting the strength of their close-knit community. Ms Fernandez and Mr Matthews have been asked to vacate the premises by Monday. But the couple started the process of launching a judicial review through their company Hoxton Beach last week.""
Emma Fernandez and Patrick Matthews currently operate three of four north London cafes and have been asked to vacate the premises. The couple contend the retendering was unfair and lacked transparency and have formally notified the corporation of their intention to seek a judicial review through their company Hoxton Beach. The corporation says the process was open, received over 30 submissions including from current operators, and denies any illegality. Community support for the couple has been strong, with a petition attracting over 23,000 signatures and nearly 9,000 raised for legal costs, and some legal help offered pro bono. Eviction proceedings were paused while legal action is prepared and the matter is with lawyers.
