"Since there was no human driver, a ticket couldn't be issued (our citation books don't have a box for 'robot'),"
"Hopefully the reprogramming will keep it from making any more illegal moves. It was a first for both officers."
"Waymo's autonomous driving system, the Waymo Driver, is designed to respect the rules of the road,"
"We are looking into this situation and are committed to improving road safety through our ongoing learnings and experience."
San Bruno police at a DUI checkpoint stopped a Waymo robo-taxi after it made an illegal U-turn and then pulled over automatically. Officers could not issue a citation because no human driver occupied the vehicle and citation forms lack an option for a robotic operator. Human drivers face a $234 fine for such turns. The police noted reprogramming may prevent future illegal moves and said current rules limit their ability to bill the vehicle operator, though changes are in progress. Waymo said its Waymo Driver is designed to follow road rules and that the company is investigating the incident.
