A Georgia jury has ordered Bayer, parent company of Monsanto, to pay nearly $2.1 billion to plaintiff John Barnes, who claims the Roundup herbicide caused his non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. The award includes $65 million in compensatory and $2 billion in punitive damages, marking one of the largest settlements linked to Roundup. Bayer, which acquired Monsanto in 2018, intends to appeal the verdict, asserting it contradicts scientific evidence highlighting Roundup's safety. This case highlights ongoing legal challenges against Bayer concerning Roundup and the company's significant financial provisions for settlements.
"It's been a long road for him . . . and he was happy that the truth related to the product has been exposed," Findley told the Associated Press on Sunday.
"The verdict will help put his client in a better position to get the treatment he needs going forward," attorney Kyle Findley stated.
Monsanto claims the verdict "conflicts with the overwhelming weight of scientific evidence and the consensus of regulatory bodies and their scientific assessments worldwide."
