Attorney charged with theft in fatal car crash case involving college student
"Indianapolis lawyer James David "JD" Masur II is charged with theft, criminal mischief and unauthorized entry of a motor vehicle. Hamilton County, Indiana, investigators said Masur had an employee of a tow yard remove items from the car two weeks after the March 2025 crash that killed Mason Alexander."
"The crash happened while Alexander was on spring break and was the passenger inside a BMW 340i that Trey Williams was driving. Williams, who was 17 years old at the time of the crash, attempted to go around a car in a no-passing zone and swerved to avoid on-coming traffic, hitting a tree."
"The wrecked car was taken to a tow yard where Masur and Alexander's uncle allegedly attempted to retrieve the car's black box, which was destroyed after the car caught fire. Other items, however, were taken."
James David Masur II, an Indianapolis lawyer representing the family of Mason Alexander, an 18-year-old University of Pittsburgh student killed in a March 2025 car crash, is charged with theft, criminal mischief, and unauthorized entry of a motor vehicle. Alexander died when the BMW he was riding in, driven by 17-year-old Trey Williams, crashed into a tree after Williams attempted to pass another vehicle in a no-passing zone. Two weeks after the crash, Masur allegedly had a tow yard employee remove items from the wrecked vehicle. Investigators indicate Masur and Alexander's uncle attempted to retrieve the car's black box, which was destroyed in a subsequent fire. The Hamilton County sheriff's office could not confirm that Masur had requested authorization to obtain items from the vehicle.
