Worcester: sanctuary city for the transgender community
Briefly

The Worcester City Council voted 9-2 to declare the city a sanctuary for the transgender community, committing to protect transgender rights and refusing to detain individuals seeking gender-affirming care. The resolution comes amidst federal shifts in policy regarding gender recognition and follows local incidents of discrimination against the city’s first nonbinary council member, Thu Nguyen. While the measure has strong support, some councilors worry it could jeopardize federal funding under a potential second Trump administration. The resolution reflects a growing trend of cities standing up for transgender rights across the U.S.
"I want to really share my gratitude and indebtedness to the community that came out," Nguyen told people at the meeting, according to WBZ.
"I don't care what your beliefs are, but to take the word 'transgender' out of the vocabulary in the federal government is just wrong," said Mayor Joseph Petty.
