The Supreme Court declined to hear a petition filed by former Kentucky county clerk Kim Davis, leaving an appeals court ruling intact that found she could be liable for refusing to issue marriage licences to same-sex couples. Davis was sued in 2015 after defying a court order following Obergefell v. Hodges by refusing to issue a licence to David Moore and David Ermold on religious grounds. The decision means the lower-court judgment stands and Davis remains liable for failing to abide by the order. Human Rights Campaign leadership praised the outcome and cited national polling showing majority support for same-sex marriage.
