Transphobes freak out over new autistic Barbie doll because she has an app to help with "pronouns" - LGBTQ Nation
"The doll, which was created with input from the autistic community, comes with several accessories that "represent common ways autistic people may experience, process, and communicate about the world around them," Mattel's press release states. These accessories include a pink finger-clip fidget spinner to reduce stress and improve focus, noise-cancelling headphones to reduce sensory overload, and an electronic tablet with Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) apps to help non-verbal autistic people interact with others."
"The e-tablet accessories' AAC apps include a column of nouns (like "people," "places," "food," and "activities") as well as pronouns (like "I," "you," "us," and "they") and other basic words. But even though all people use pronouns every day to communicate about themselves and the world around them, transphobes suspect that autistic Barbie's pronouns app is part of a shadowy agenda to turn kids trans."
An autistic Barbie was created with input from the autistic community and includes accessories reflecting common autistic experiences. Accessories include a finger-clip fidget spinner, noise-cancelling headphones, and an electronic tablet featuring Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) apps. The AAC tablet displays nouns, pronouns, and basic words to help non-verbal autistic people communicate. The inclusion of pronouns on the tablet has prompted transphobic criticism claiming it promotes gender ideology. A portion of the dolls are being donated to hospitals. The accessories aim to reduce sensory overload and support focus and communication for autistic users.
