Cayla Calhoun was brutally attacked near the National Mall on June 29 by three men on scooters who surrounded her and shouted anti-trans slurs. Having left Alabama for what she believed would be a safer environment as a transgender person, she faced violence instead. Calhoun had just finished her shift as a sommelier and was heading to a bar when she was approached. Despite her attempts to escape on her Onewheel electric board, she was pushed off and assaulted in the dark hours of the night near significant landmarks in D.C.

On the night of the attack, Calhoun had finished a late shift as a sommelier and ventured out for a drink while wearing a skirt and rainbow pin.
The assault occurred as Calhoun was riding her Onewheel electric board from Georgetown to the National Mall, where she faced verbal and physical aggression.
