A sit-in occurred in a women's toilet at the Texas state capitol to protest a senate bill that would designate toilets, changing rooms and women's shelters based on an individual's biological sex. The proposed legislation would impose fines of $5,000 for first-time offences by government agencies or educational establishments and $25,000 for subsequent violations. Nine cis and trans people occupied the toilet for about an hour while about 50 others protested outside. The demonstration was supported by the Gender Liberation Movement and drew inspiration from a prior protest against a ban on trans lawmakers using single-sex facilities in the US Capitol.
Bills like SB8 are not about safety, they are about control. As a Black transgender woman from the south, I know what it means to live under segregationist thinking, and this bathroom bigotry is just its latest form. Texans deserve leaders focused on jobs, healthcare and lowering costs, not criminalising our existence. Trans people are sacred, brilliant and resilient, and we will not be erased.
