"Like so many of you, I came here today with my family and friends. My twin sister is somewhere out there in that crowd of people. Growing up, you know, she fit the mold of what people expected. You could say I broke the mold, but our parents loved us just the same. We did not know anybody transgender. We did not know the word. But they gave us love and support we needed to thrive."
"But this president has a darker vision for America. One where our families are told how to parent their children, where the doctors are forced to forgo their oaths to do no harm, where the government is ripping families apart and hurting our people. They are cutting billions of dollars from HIV prevention and treatment. They are banning our books. They are firing teachers who use a student's nickname. They are firing gay workers who put a pride flag on their desk."
Jay Brown, chief of staff for the Human Rights Campaign, spoke at Washington, D.C.'s No Kings rally and declared transgender Americans belong in the country. Brown described growing up with a supportive family, having a twin sister who fit expectations, and lacking language or community around being transgender. Brown condemned current administration policies as harmful, citing parental control mandates, pressure on medical professionals, family separations, cuts to HIV prevention and treatment, book bans, and firings of teachers and gay workers. Brown affirmed HRC's 3.6 million members and insisted America will not accept a king. Former assistant Secretary of Defense Shawn Skelly also identified as a proud trans woman and vowed to fight for rights.
