Tennis star flooded with support after coming out as gay: 'Undeniable bravery'
"Through all of this, one of the most important things I've learned is that success on the court isn't just about physical skill - it's about discovering your personality and staying true to yourself,"
"Ive been thinking a lot about how to talk about this. And while it hasn't always been easy, hiding it and pretending to be someone I'm not was never an option."
"Being gay doesn't mean loving the same gender - it also means dealing with things most people never have to think about. The fear of not being accepted, the pressure to stay quiet, the feeling of being different. But I've grown. And I'm proud of who I am today."
Mika Brunold, a 21-year-old Swiss tennis player, announced on Instagram that he is gay and said he is proud of who he is. He described how training taught him that success requires discovering personality and staying true to oneself. He said hiding his identity was never an option and that he decided to open up to take a step for himself and to address a lack of discussion about sexuality in sports. He noted the fear of non-acceptance and pressure to stay quiet, and received numerous supportive responses from peers and fans. Brunold competes mainly on the Challenger Tour and reached semi-finals in Nottingham and the Royan Atlantique Open earlier this year.
