Renee Rapp slams Betty Who's comments on her sexuality
"I think it's hard when you become representative of something to other people, and then you change or you are just following your heart, and then that means other people feel that they are not represented anymore. The pressure of that is so immense. As much as it's funny that Reneé Rapp is like, 'You'll never catch me dating a man.' It's like, 'Go off, queen! I love that for you.' But I also hold space for her in 10 years if she goes, 'Oops, I met the love of my life and it's this man, I didn't mean to.' It's like, that's okay!"
"People are always going for lesbians! Somebody's gonna bring my name into the conversation if they want to be in the conversation. So no, it doesn't surprise me at all."
"I mean, it's just very similar to the whole, 'she hasn't found the right man,'"
Reneé Rapp publicly rejected comments by Australian singer Betty Who that Rapp might one day date a man. Betty Who had suggested on a podcast that artists who become seen as representative can later 'change' or follow their heart, and she held space for Rapp possibly meeting a man in the future. Who later apologised for describing that view as acceptable and for making 'lesbophobic' remarks. Rapp responded in a Cosmopolitan interview, saying people target lesbians and noting those assumptions resemble the idea that a woman 'hasn't found the right man.' Rapp expressed clear frustration and refusal of that narrative.
