NHS England will pioneer a Gonorrhoea vaccine specifically for gay and bisexual men with multiple sexual partners, making it the first of its kind globally. This initiative responds to the alarming rise in Gonorrhoea infections, hitting a historical high last year. The vaccine, repurposed from meningitis B, is estimated to reduce infections by 100,000, saving the NHS £8 million over the next decade. Despite its 30-40% efficacy, it won't eliminate the STI risk entirely. The roll-out, beginning in August, aims to ease pressure on health clinics with public health initiatives also considered in Scotland.
While it's great that we're taking this step with the NHS Gonorrhoea vaccine, it's important to remember that it doesn't completely eliminate the risk of infection.
Vaccination against Gonorrhoea, particularly for those at risk, could significantly alleviate the burden on our overstretched sexual health services.
