Newly elected far-right lawmaker uses maiden speech to confirm he's gay and to thank boyfriend - Queerty
A newly elected One Nation MP for MacKillop used his maiden speech to confirm he is gay. He said that during the campaign a woman contacted him to warn that people were spreading claims across the electorate that he was gay. He suspected the information was being shared maliciously. He stated that he has been openly gay throughout his adult life and preferred that his community hear it directly from him rather than through political opponents or rumors. He said some gay people may hide their sexuality for safety or to avoid awkwardness. He also revealed he has a Muslim partner who grew up in Indonesia and migrated to Australia.
""Rather my community hear it directly from me "I do not wave the flag in the air as I walk down the street," Virgo continued. "I prefer people to find out these things naturally. There are times when those of us who are gay feel we have to hide it for our own safety or just sometimes to avoid social awkwardness. But I would rather my community hear it directly from me than from a potential political opponent or whispers.""
""If someone does seek to weaponize who I am, that says more about them than it does about me. I wish, in respects, I was more like my last surviving grandparent, Nana Betty Stanley, who, no matter what would happen to her in life, would always just brush it off and say, 'Oh well, it could have been worse.' As my partner know"
