New Zealand will soon allow gay & bi men to donate blood - LGBTQ Nation
""For the first time, all donors are going to be asked the same questions about recent sexual activity," NZ Blood Service Chief Medical Officer Dr. Sarah Morley stated, emphasizing the shift from focusing on men who have sex with men to a more inclusive approach."
""The rule change would increase the number of potential donors, which can help cover shortages in blood supply," said Liz Gibbs, CEO of the Burnett Foundation, highlighting the positive impact on community health."
""Blood donation has been a difficult topic for many reasons, but particularly for this reason, for men who have sex with other men," Dr. Morley noted, indicating the historical challenges faced by this group."
Starting May 4, the New Zealand Blood Service will allow gay and bi men to donate blood by assessing donors based on behavior rather than sexual orientation. Currently, men cannot donate blood within three months of sexual activity with another man. The new rules will implement an individualized risk assessment system, similar to practices in other countries. This change aims to increase potential donors, address blood supply shortages, and eliminate discriminatory practices, providing an opportunity for previously excluded men to contribute to their community.
