NBC News layoffs end its reporting team for LGBTQ+ focused news vertical NBC Out - LGBTQ Nation
"NBC News is eliminating its reporting teams specifically dedicated to covering issues affecting marginalized groups, including the LGBTQ+ community."
"But GLAAD chief communications officer Rich Ferraro told The Advocate that the elimination of the NBC Out team is "part of a dangerous pattern of mainstream media outlets choosing to lose trusted and talented journalists who focus on important LGBTQ news that otherwise is under-reported or not reported at all.""
""The talented journalists at NBC Out consistently lead with impact and accuracy," Ferraro told the outlet. "This is a terrible and poorly-timed loss for journalism and for our democracy.""
NBC News is eliminating reporting teams dedicated to covering marginalized groups, including NBC BLK, NBC Latino, NBC Asian America, and NBC Out. Executive vice president Catherine Kim announced layoffs affecting about 150 staffers across the news operation. The verticals will continue publishing with stories drawn from the wider newsroom, and the network may retain up to five staffers to contribute while other team members are reassigned to editorial roles. GLAAD chief communications officer Rich Ferraro described the loss of the NBC Out team as part of a dangerous pattern that reduces coverage of under-reported LGBTQ news and as a blow to journalism and democracy. The layoffs coincide with an MSNBC spin-off into a new company, Versant.
