We hope that all of our fans will see that Tomodachi Life was intended to be a whimsical and quirky game, and that we were absolutely not trying to provide social commentary," the company said."
Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream will let players select a nonbinary gender for Mii characters and set dating preferences to date or marry one or multiple genders or none. The original 2009 game allowed customizable Mii characters to explore worlds, play minigames, and form relationships but lacked options for gay, bisexual, aromantic, or nonbinary identities. Nintendo previously told fans the game was a whimsical alternate world and later apologized for inability to update the original, promising future inclusivity.
