Man caught throwing dog poo at LGBTQ+ centre - but police won't prosecute
"First reported back in the summer, at that time the LGBTQ+ centre's leadership described the faecal vandalism as "senseless harassment" that is "abhorrent" and "unacceptable"."
"However, after alerting the police, the centre's leadership was told the incidents do not meet the threshold for criminal prosecution for vandalism, with Bell Police Department chief Damien Velasco stating it is a "littering offence" and citation could only be written if "a police officer was present and witnessed the littering"."
""We cannot allow incidents like this to be normalised. It is hateful, it is disgusting, and it must stop.""
Staff at Mi SELA LGBTQ+ youth centre in Bell, run by Latino Equality Alliance, have removed dozens of bags of dog faeces from the building's front awning since June. The centre used a $2,500 grant from Los Angeles County supervisor Janice Hahn to install new CCTV cameras, which captured the individual in the act. Bell Police Department said the incidents do not meet the threshold for criminal vandalism and characterised the behaviour as a littering offence, noting a citation requires an officer to witness the act. Janice Hahn's office has called for a hate-crime investigation and condemned the behaviour as hateful and unacceptable.
