Male Couples Stay Together Longer Than Many People Think
"In 2020, research in the Journal of GLBT Family Studies noted that men in same-sex couples report higher levels of relationship quality, compatibility, and intimacy; the article cited results from an earlier study (2016) reporting reasons for their longevity: communication, similarity in values, shared experiences, commitment to the relationship, and support from others. The UCLA School of Law's Williams Institute followed 500 male, female, and heterosexual couples over 12 years in Vermont."
"The study found gay men are less likely to stay married than their straight counterparts, but that lesbian marriages were the most likely to break up, more than twice as likely as gay men, and one and a half times as likely as straight marriages. Another 2018 study cited by MyGWork found that more young gay men were seeking monogamous relationships than their older counterparts."
Multiple studies indicate notable gender differences in same-sex relationship stability. Male same-sex couples show higher relationship quality, compatibility, and intimacy, with longevity attributed to communication, shared values, shared experiences, commitment, and social support. A Finland 2025 study links high divorce rates among female couples to unobserved minority stress and finds male marriages stabilize with increasing income equality. A longitudinal Vermont study found gay men were less likely to stay married than straight couples, while lesbian marriages had the highest breakup rates. Surveys show younger gay men increasingly seek monogamous, marital relationships.
