LGBTQ+ youth center forced to closed after a thief stole its $10,000 emergency fund - LGBTQ Nation
"It was our entire emergency fund,"
"This is really just like the straw that breaks the camel's back,"
"He knew exactly what he was going after,"
Denver police arrested 58-year-old Stephen Guerra after officers found him driving a stolen Toyota RAV4 with two empty cash boxes taken from a safe at YouthSeen. The burglar removed nearly $10,000 in cash, an iPad, electronic equipment, keys and vehicle registration in addition to an SUV. YouthSeen closed its offices indefinitely and will continue operating online while seeking funds to cover the loss. YouthSeen serves primarily BIPoC LGBTQ+ youth with after-school programs, a community hangout, and peer-group counseling. Surveillance footage shows the suspect jimmyed a side door, went directly to the safe, and looked at a camera. Guerra has a lengthy criminal history and is being held for investigation of second-degree burglary.
