LGBTQ+ Olympians endure threats for speaking out against US government - LGBTQ Nation
"When I chose to utilize one of the amazing things about the United States of America (Freedom of speech) to convey how I feel as an athlete competing for Team USA in a troubling time for many Americans I am now receiving a scary amount of hate/threats for simply using my voice WHEN ASKED about how I feel,"
"I did anticipate this but I am disappointed by it."
"I will be limiting my time on social media for my own wellbeing for now but I will never stop using my voice for what I believe in."
"I know that a lot of people will say, 'You're just an athlete, stick to your job, shut up about politics,' but politics affect us all,"
A record 47 out LGBTQ+ athletes are competing in the 2026 Olympic Games, with eight representing the United States. Amber Glenn, a bisexual and pansexual member of Team USA and the first out LGBTQ+ woman to compete in Olympic figure skating, received a wave of hateful comments and threats after speaking about LGBTQ+ rights. A reporter asked how the president's treatment of LGBTQ+ people affects her; she said she hopes to use her platform to encourage people to stay strong. Glenn announced she will limit social media for her wellbeing but pledged to keep using her voice.
