LGBTQ+ members of Congress demand Marco Rubio restore queer human rights violation tracking
"We strongly oppose your decision to remove the subsection on Acts of Violence, Criminalization, and Other Abuses Based on Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity or Expression, or Sex Characteristics (SOGIESC Subsection) from the State Department's Annual Country Reports on Human Rights Practices,"
"We urge you to restore this information, or else ensure it is integrated throughout each Human Rights Report. We are also deeply concerned about the broader rollback of the section on Discrimination and Societal Abuses which has existed for many years-including during the first Trump administration."
The Congressional Equality Caucus out co-chairs, Reps. Robert Garcia, Julie Johnson and Sarah McBride, demanded restoration of SOGIESC data after its removal from the State Department's Annual Country Reports on Human Rights Practices. The co-chairs insisted on either restoring the Acts of Violence, Criminalization, and Other Abuses Based on Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity or Expression, or Sex Characteristics subsection or integrating its information throughout each report. They expressed deep concern about a broader rollback of the Discrimination and Societal Abuses section. Marco Rubio has previously condemned Chechnya's abuses but has not publicly addressed the omissions.
