Kady Grass, a 19-year-old lesbian, was attacked at a McDonald's in Carpentersville, Illinois after confronting two men who called her a homophobic slur. After being struck and knocked unconscious, Grass's 13-year-old cousin witnessed the assault. The attackers continued to beat Grass while a McDonald's manager attempted to intervene. The attackers, along with two girls who were in the restroom, stole Grass's belongings before fleeing. Grass later learned that one of the attackers was charged with multiple offenses related to the incident.
