The Lesbian Action Group (LAG) is seeking to overturn a denial from the Australian Human Rights Commission to exclude bisexual and transgender women from events, arguing for a designated space for young lesbians.
LAG expressed concern for young lesbians lacking community spaces for socialization, stating, "Young lesbians have no community or lesbian-only spaces in which to socialise and meet potential partners." They feel everything LGBTIQ+ has become 'compulsory mixed sex'.
Lawyer Leigh Howard referenced the Peel Hotel case to support LAG's request, stating, 'That is a really good example of how these exemptions are supposed to work. May we please have one as well?'
The Australian Human Rights Commission denied LAG's request, citing the risk of further discrimination against trans individuals, thus highlighting a balancing act between minority rights and group-only spaces.
