"I'm absolutely 100 per cent going to stand in the way of any man who wants to be in a woman's restroom, in our locker rooms, in our changing rooms. I will be there fighting you every step of the way," said Nancy Mace, emphasizing her commitment to the proposed restrictions on access to single-sex facilities based on biological sex. This marks a significant shift from her previous support for LGBTQ+ equality.
"Single-sex facilities in the Capitol and house office buildings, such as restrooms, changing rooms and locker rooms, are reserved for individuals of that biological sex. Women deserve women's only spaces," stated Republican speaker Mike Johnson, reinforcing the rationale behind the measure, coinciding with the increasing narrative around the rights of biological women in public spaces.
Writing for MSNBC, journalist Brad Polumbo noted, "I was surprised to see Mace take such a deep dive into anti-LGBTQ+ culture wars because, when I interviewed her in 2021, shortly after she took office, she framed herself as a pro-LGBT, social moderate." This highlights the drastic shift in Mace's political stance concerning LGBTQ+ issues.
