Gay actor BD Wong apologises for racist joke: 'Nobody gets a free pass'
"Y'all l made a very bad joke, As most people in hot water do, I deleted it for Damage Control but it's out there & continues to hurt & disappoint & I'm really sorry about the hurt part."
"I know nobody gets a free pass. I'm sorry if this moment tarnished any respect you may've had for me. & thanks if you advocate for an internet that's safe for everybody."
"It's also wrong to try to 'explain' anything, & I think that causes a further breaking down in folks' trust. Let me please spend the energy on how wrong I know it is to exploit a despicable, racist trope in the supposed spirit of humour; I do know better, but again no excuses,"
BD Wong, 65, responded to a social media post by Black influencer Mike Holston with a racist joke comparing a binturong to a Black man. He deleted the comment and apologised publicly on Threads, acknowledging the joke was 'super dumb' and 'Super Wrong.' He accepted responsibility, said nobody gets a free pass, and apologised for any damage to respect. He warned against trying to explain the comment, saying explanations further erode trust, and vowed to focus on acknowledging the exploitation of a racist trope and offer no excuses. Wong's acting credits include Jurassic World: Dominion, Law & Order: SVU, Mr Robot, Gotham, and voicing Captain Li Shang.
