There must have been sex in Ireland before Edna O'Brien wrote about it, but unless it was sex sanctified by a wedding ceremony it didn't exist - at least not in the national discourse.
Women were required to lie back in bed and submit to their duty while men fathered children by them. Joyous expression of female desire inside or outside marriage was absent from the written word.
