Maxi Shield was taken to hospital on 18 August after a swollen gland began pressing against blood vessels in her throat while performing at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. She was admitted to St John's Hospital in Livingston, which specialises in ear, nose and throat issues, where clinicians ran tests including nasal endoscopies and ultrasounds to investigate the condition. The Fountain Lakes In Lockdown cast continued performances with Jarryd Prain stepping into her role. A fundraiser established to support her financially during recovery had raised almost $15,000. She expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support and was discharged in time to see the show's final performance.
"Monday was a surprise. I've had an issue with a swollen gland that was pushing on blood vessels in my throat, so that was very dramatic, very scary," she shared.
"They're doing lots of tests on me, lots of cameras down the nose, ultrasounds. They're just trying to work out what's going on," she explained. "Hopefully I will be at home in Sydney pretty soon."
"It is very scary but to see [all] the love come through [has been] great."
"It's truly overwhelming, I have only been concentrating on getting home, but to have sisters looking out for me, is wonderful. THANK YOU FOR THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART. Love Maxi,"
