"The organizers of Disney Gay Days - the unofficial annual fan event where LGBTQ+ people visit the Disney World theme park in Orlando, Florida - cancelled this year's event, scheduled for the first weekend in June (which was to be the event's 35th anniversary), according to a public Facebook post published Sunday. "Changes to our host hotel agreement, the loss of key sponsorship support, and broader challenges currently impacting LGBTQIA+ events nationwide made it impossible to deliver the experience our community deserves," organizers wrote."
"In 2023, the Human Rights Campaign issued a travel warning for Florida. The warning was not "a blanket recommendation against travel nor a call for boycott" but rather meant to make people aware of "the devastating impacts of laws that are hostile to the LGBTQ community ... in order that prospective travelers or residents can make the best decisions for themselves and their families.""
Disney Gay Days canceled its 2025 gathering that was planned for the first weekend in June, the event's planned 35th anniversary. Organizers cited changes to a host hotel agreement, loss of key sponsorship support, and broader challenges affecting LGBTQIA+ events nationwide as reasons for cancellation. Organizers described the cancellation as a pause rather than an ending and said they will reimagine the event to make it stronger and more sustainable. Recent Florida laws restricting transgender, intersex, and non-binary people and allowing medical refusals and temporary custody changes create a broader context for event decisions. The Human Rights Campaign issued a 2023 travel warning for Florida.
