"Maelle embarks on this crazy journey. She chooses to leave a life that wasn't serving her. And I did that a few years ago. And I chose, instead, a life that was authentic, a life that was gay."
Jennifer English won the Best Lead Performer award at the Golden Joystick Awards for her role as Maelle in Sandfall Interactive's Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. Maelle is a 16-year-old chosen for a suicide mission to slay the Paintress and stop the annual Gommage that kidnaps certain-aged humans. English, an out lesbian, described choosing an authentic, gay life after falling in love and said her partner was visibly moved at the ceremony. English dedicated the win to queer joy and said that queer joy allowed her to safely channel grief, pain, joy and love into the character. She thanked voters and expressed shock at winning against notable nominees.
