""He didn't even know that that was going to stop," Montgomery told Fox affiliate KTVU. "That scared me because [the house] could have caught fire so easily.""
""Even with the sensor lights going off, they didn't have regard for it and still did it," Garcia said. "So the mission was clear: to destroy property and make us fearful and be hurtful.""
""To have someone try to take that away from us was such an act of violence that could have done a lot of damage," Garcia said."
An attacker set fire to a Pride flag at a San Leandro home early in the morning, captured on the homeowners' security camera. Husbands Daniel Montgomery and Nick Garcia discovered the burnt flag after noticing it from a kitchen window and reviewing footage showing the suspect ignite the flag and pause to watch it burn. The flames self-extinguished but left burn marks on the garage. Neighbors offered support and replacement flags. Police are investigating the incident as a hate crime and have not identified a suspect. The couple displayed the flag to signal safety amid heightened anti-LGBTQ+ political tensions.
