Map shows how many Houston workers moved at least 50 miles away from their jobs
Briefly

Houston's workforce is gradually moving to suburban areas as high housing costs and remote work become more prevalent. From 2012 to 2022, the percentage of workers living over 50 miles from their jobs rose from 13% to nearly 15%. Experts note that this trend is influenced by factors such as employer growth and infrastructure developments. Unlike other cities, Houston's suburban migration has not been as drastic, indicating a more complex local dynamic where housing affordability and commute potential shape living decisions.
Approximately 13% of Houston workers resided more than 50 miles from their jobs in 2012, which increased to nearly 15% by 2022 according to data.
Holly Heard stated, "People are making decisions about where to live based on not just where they can afford to live, but where they can afford to commute from."
The census data indicates a movement towards suburban living, yet shifts are not as severe in Houston compared to other cities, due to several local factors.
Pramod Sambidi explained that workers are increasingly moving to the Conroe area, attracted by new housing developments and better living conditions.
