'Cheers' Star Buys 'Bad Boy's' House
"Brian doesn't do work in a particular style, though there are traces of Spanish or Mediterranean architecture in this house. It is a contemporary home, but it has a flavor of the Third World."
"The house has some walls made of firewood and awnings created from thatched eucalyptus branches and grape stakes from an old fence that was around the property. Walkways, steps, counters and floors are covered with broken pieces of old tile set in concrete to look like patchwork quilts."
Shelley Long, known for her role in the NBC sitcom "Cheers," and her husband Bruce Tyson are buying a Pacific Palisades residence for about $3 million from Santa Monica architect Brian Murphy. Murphy, nicknamed "the bad boy of architecture," is recognized for his distinctive approach using familiar materials in unconventional ways. The contemporary home blends Spanish and Mediterranean architectural elements with Third World aesthetics. Notable features include walls constructed from firewood, awnings made from thatched eucalyptus branches and reclaimed fence materials, and floors covered with broken tile pieces arranged in patchwork patterns. The two-story property contains four bedrooms, seven bathrooms, dual steam showers, a paddle tennis court, 40-foot lap pool, spa, and beach views. Murphy purchased the half-acre property in 1987 and expanded the original 1963 structure from 3,968 to approximately 7,000 square feet.
